Is there any help out there for troubled home owner being late with mortgage payments?

I am not looking for a refinance company, but maybe some other kind of help, my friend is about to loose his house because the crisis that we have in the US is really getting to him and family. He is about to loose his home since he is 4 months behind in payments. Is there any help out there for troubled home owner being late with mortgage payments?
There are services available. The usual step is try to call the lender directly and try to work out a deal. At four missed or late payments, it maybe too late to stop foreclosure, which oddly is not the worst case scenario. These days the banks do not want more properties on the their books are more willing to try to help. There are also government sponsored and assistance, try to look into these options.

Of course contacting his servicer would be a good idea to see if there is some sort of modification or work-out that could be done to attain long term affordability.

Here is another resource:

The housing rescue bill HR3221 may have some options as well, but I don't know if that has kicked in yet for the bail outs yet.

I hope something here is helpful.
